Welcome to Ward 29
Ward 29 is a renal inpatient ward which cares for patients with both acute and chronic renal disease. The ward aims to provide high quality care for patients requiring renal replacement therapy or intervention.
We are a 28 bedded ward consisting of four bays, each with six beds, and four side rooms. The bays are single sex areas. However, very occasionally due to the nature of the speciality it may be necessary to care for male and female patients in the same area. This would be for the shortest time period possible and will be reviewed regularly.
On your admission, a nurse will perform a nursing assessment which includes taking your blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, temperature and oxygen saturation levels. You will be asked several questions in order for the nursing team to establish your level of dependency and assistance required with personal hygiene and other care needs.
A qualified nurse will oversee your care. Whenever possible this will be the same nurse for her spell of duty to ensure continuity of care.

Investigations
Any investigations required will be arranged as soon as possible. However, occasionally they may take time to arrange. Should you have any concerns regarding this, please approach ward staff.
Medication
Medication is reviewed on a daily basis by the Renal Pharmacist and the Pharmacy Technician. Please arrange for your medications to be brought to the ward with you, or as soon as possible after your admission to ensure you continue to take your regular prescription medications. To ensure your safety, these will be locked away in your bedside locker. Please do not take any medication but allow the nursing staff to administer what is prescribed. Please approach ward staff if you wish to gain clarification over your medication.
Discharge
Arrangements for your discharge and your estimated date of discharge will be discussed on your admission. Once you are medically fit for discharge, and in the event that you are required to wait for medication and / or transport, arrangements may be made for you to wait in the discharge lounge, located next to ward 23 at the Royal Infirmary site. Here, qualified nursing staff will continue to look after you until you are ready to go home, and food and drink will be made available to you.
Please note if you are waiting for medication to be dispensed, this can sometimes take time. Your patience is appreciated.

North Staffs Kidney Patient Association (NSKPA)
The NSKPA was founded 25 years ago by a small group of dialysis patients to support renal patients and their carers. The charity is independent from the Trust and its aim is to help and provide equipment for use at home, especially for patients with mobility problems. Once a patient joins the renal replacement programme they automatically become a member of the NSKPA, unless they chose to opt out. There are no membership fees.
If you are admitted to Ward 29, and your visitors are experiencing difficulty in getting to Ward 29, please a member of the nursing team to contact Mr Mark Davis and he may be able to help. This may be by bringing in items for you that you require or simply by being there for you to. Mrs Helen Martin, another NSKPA committee member is also willing to be contacted.
The NSKPA also has its own information notice board on Ward 29 which is situated on the wall of the main corridor leading into the ward, so please look out for further information and support, and events that may be taking place.
